Training
Your puppy will come well on his/her way to being sucessful with a litter pan, but this is
not what I consider reliably housetrained.  I personally believe the best way to
housebreak a Havanese is to CrateTrain them.  Your puppy will come with several
wonderful articles on crate training and instructions.  In the meantimelet me take a
moment and explain a typical day.

The Typical Day

Your Puppy Wakes up in the morning,  you take it out of the crate and CARRY it outside
to its potty area, where you place it and use the "key" word your family chose.  Once it
Potties, bring back into the house and feed him breakfast.  About 20 minutes later,
take him back to his potty area and use your "key" word again and allow your puppy to
potty.  Now he can come back in and play for a while (probably 45 minutes) - he can do
this with you or in his playpen by himself.  NEVER ALLOW YOUR CHILDREN IN THE
PUPPIES PLAYPEN.  Your puppy needs to learn to play by himself.   When he begins to
tucker out,  put him in his crate with the door shut for a nap...  When he awakes,  take
him out of the crate and CARRY him to his potty area and again use your key word.
Once he potties, he may come in and play.  Once he begins to tucker, return him to his
crate for another nap.  When he awakes, take him out of his crate and CARRY him
outside to his potty area and use your key word.  Once he potties, bring him in if it is a
meal time, feed him and wait about 20 minutes and take him back out to potty...  then
bring him in to play,  once he tuckers back in his crate for a nap.  Keep repeating this
cycle over and over again, day after day and soon you will be on your way to a reliably
housetrained puppy.  Consistancy is the key to quick and successful houstraining.

**One side note,  you puppy may wake up once in the night to go out... This usually
subsides by 12 weeks.

Going out for more than 2 hours at First

Because it is essential your puppy doesn't potty in his crate, we have to offer him an
alternative to relieve himself if you are not going to be there to take him out.  The
easiest method is to use his knowledge of litter box training.  So, potty him before
leaving outside and then place him in his playpen.  Put his bed at one end and Litter
box)Purina Litter Pan-Small) with a wee pad in it at the other.  Give him lots of bones
and toys...   Hang a water bottle on the playpen or give him a water bowl and leave down
dry kibble.  Now you can succesfully leave him for approx 4 hours...
